Student leadership is key to building confidence, responsibility and a strong sense of community. Our student leaders are role models who help inspire and support their peers while developing skills that will serve them throughout life.
Through meaningful opportunities and guided mentorship, we empower students to take initiative, contribute positively, and grow as active members of our school community.
Our School Captains take on the responsibility of being the representatives of our student body at Watsonia North through many official duties. They organise the weekly agenda and run our Monday morning assemblies, as well as develop their public speaking skills at other special functions, assemblies, and ceremonies throughout the year. They are responsible for representing our school at community events, including memorial services for ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.
School Captains promote student voice through their role as Student Representative Council (SRC) co-presidents, requiring them to chair regular meetings of the group and represent the SRC at school council meetings.
They welcome guests, conduct tours of our school and liaise with our leadership team on behalf of all students at Watsonia North.
The Watsonia North House Captains are elected Year 6 students. Their main responsibilities include assisting the school sports program. They assist with organising and setting up special sports days throughout the year. House Captains are essential for motivating and serving as role models for students within their House.
They set the standard for students by displaying outstanding sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and leadership, while encouraging others in all facets, not just on sports days, at school.
House Captains also have several public speaking obligations at assemblies and special events.
Students successfully elected to the role of SRC representatives are required to meet regularly to discuss issues relevant to Watsonia North. They have the responsibility of amplifying the student voice of all students. They achieve this by actively seeking input on various issues from students in their class and presenting this at regular meetings.
SRC members are encouraged to be proactive in initiating and working on issues and activities such as changes to school practices and organising and running fundraising events for the school and community.
The Watsonia North Green team comprises representatives from Years 1 to 6. They meet regularly to discuss and address issues related to the environment and sustainability.
They promote the voices of others by working with their class group to seek and act upon feedback from their peers regarding all environmental issues relevant to our school and community.
The Student Wellbeing Team at Watsonia North is represented by elected members from Year 1 to Year 6. They meet regularly to discuss issues and take proactive measures on all matters related to the mental and physical wellbeing of our students, staff, and community.
They organise and run special events and celebration days throughout the year, working closely with their peers to ensure that the wellbeing of all is incorporated into all facets of Watsonia North.
Successful applicants for the role of Music Captain work closely with our Music teacher, demonstrating passion, commitment, and enthusiasm for the Performing Arts. They are involved in the organisation and presentation of various performances throughout the year and are responsible for emceeing special events.
TechSperts complete a written application process at the start of the year and are then appointed by their classroom teachers based on this application.
They are highly competent in operating the Office 365 program suite and are confident in assisting others with their one-to-one device.
TechSperts understand the importance of being a good ‘Digital Citizen’ and model responsible and respectful habits with ICT devices at all times.
Their responsibilities include assisting other grades, especially when connecting or using programs for the first time, or to troubleshoot basic problems and supporting teachers in uploading content for online journals (such as SeeSaw).
Our Year 6 Student Leaders are empowered to design, plan, and deliver engaging lessons that promote student wellbeing and a sense of belonging.
Three times a year, all students across the school are placed into multi-age groupings, fostering a collaborative environment where younger and older students can learn from each other.
This initiative not only enhances social connections but also allows our student leaders to develop essential skills such as responsibility, communication, and empathy.
By taking on the role of educators, our Year 6 students gain confidence and a deeper understanding of leadership, preparing them for future challenges.
At our school, we offer a variety of lunchtime clubs that give students the chance to explore new interests, build friendships, and have fun outside the regular classroom setting.
Our Year 6 students decide which clubs we will offer each semester and are responsible for facilitating the organisation, and activities needed to support student interest. Our clubs run during lunch, and are open to different year levels depending on the activity. Students decide which clubs to ‘drop-in’ on based on their interests on the day.
We have found that offering clubs:
Joining a club is a great way for students to discover new passions, make new friends, and feel more connected to school life. We encourage students to get involved!
